Wise Shannon

Pretty DogThere are names that have countless meanings, some of which reflect happy, lucky, friendly, or even the wild nature of the bearer. Still, others reflect the name bearer’s wisdom. Wisdom is a coveted characteristic that many strive for, particularly to navigate the numerous challenges in life.

For a dog with such a trait, there is a name that captures this particularly wonderful characteristic in a short and sweet way… Shannon.

A well of wisdom

With an Irish background, Shannon means “wise river,” “little old wise one” or “wise old owl.” The latter two meanings are often considered mild misinterpretations, mainly due to the name’s origins.

The name has its roots in Irish mythology. The goddess Siona, whose name means “possessor of wisdom,” was the matron of the Sionainn River, the longest river in the British Isles. This is one of the seven rivers that were said to have their source from Connla’s Well, a great source of wisdom in the mythology, where creatures and plants grew and thrived, wishing to share wisdom with all other creatures in the world.

Alternative spellings

There are quite a few alternative spellings, including Shannen, Shanon, Seanan, and Siannon, all which are pronounced the same or at least in a similar way. It’s also important to note that this name happens to be genuinely unisex, so it’s safe to say that wisdom has no favorites between boys and girls.

In sports, Shannon Sharpe, known for his time spent with the Denver Broncos, was the first tight end to amass over 10,000 receiving yards during the course of his NFL career. In music, popular rock band “Thirty Seconds to Mars” has a drummer by the name Shannon Leto. In the film world, there is Shannon Doherty, a well-known American actress popular for her roles as Brenda Walsh in Beverly Hills, 90210 and as Prue Harniwell in the late 90’s drama Charmed.

Wise character

Orderly in nature, pups named Shannon find it easy to learn where things go, particularly where their toys should be placed when they are finished playing with them. They’re easy to train, often appearing to already have the knowledge.

Quieter than most, these dogs don’t need to make much noise to get the message across. They use their body and woofs to carry on a good conversation, and rarely get frustrated when you just don’t get it. Because of their nature, they seem cautious and careful, especially when meeting new people or pups, which means it is a little more frustrating for them to make new friends at times.

Dogs display a wide variety of characteristics, defining their pup-sonalities in countless ways that can rarely be defined by just one name. However, Shannon is a wonderful name that describes the wisdom that flows within our furry friends, and can work for either a male or a female pup. Do you have a Shannon in your home? Do they embody the qualities mentioned here? We would love to know.
