Smart as an Einstein

furry dogIs your dog a brainy one? Do you find that you’re sometimes outsmarted by their sheer cleverness? Dogs have a knack for figuring things out, such as opening the cabinet where their food is kept and grabbing a snack, or getting things off the high counters even when there doesn’t seem to be any natural way up.

Albert Einstein was one of the prominently genius minds of the 20th century, developing theories and proposing new ideas that led science in a new direction. But did you know that Einstein was also an avid dog and cat lover?

The name Einstein has little original history, other than it’s the last name of the famous Jewish physicist born in Germany in 1879. In 1905, he won the Nobel Prize for his discovery of the photoelectric effect, and was dubbed by Time Magazine as the Man of the Century.

Today, the name is commonly used to point out the intellectual genius in others (That’s quite ingenious of you, what an Einstein!) On occasion, it is a name often used in a sarcastic manner: if you’re often goofing up in small doses, such as forgetting to tie your shoe laces (Einstein didn’t either so don’t worry) or forgetting that one item you went to get at the grocery store.

A featured name

While the name Einstein isn’t popularly used for people, it has been featured in numerous stories and movies featuring our furry canine friends.

In the classic movie “Back to the Future,” Einstein is the character Doc Brown’s furry companion in 1985 (Copernicus was his dog in 1955) and also the world’s first time traveler. In the anime series Cowboy Bebop, this is the name of the famous data-dog corgi, a pup who seems to find himself in various space travel adventures. Another featured spot for this name happens to be the accident prone Great Dane featured in the 1988 Disney movie, “Oliver and Company.”

Simplified

Because the name Einstein is so long, it does make it difficult for dogs to pick up and is a little burdensome for owners to constantly have to say or repeat (especially when their friend is busy making a discovery). In most cases, the nicknames Ein or Einie seem to be sufficient enough, and are easy for a pup to recognize even in a large crowd.

This name is quite a popular choice for pups of all sizes and breeds. And it doesn’t matter how intelligent your pup may seem because they will always come up with a new ingenious way to get into their treat bag when you aren’t looking.

Just remember that according to Albert Einstein, “Everyone is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing it is stupid.” So, feel free to share a few Einstein moments and stories that your pup has had.
