Huff and Puff Kirby

P6260092Some names are just perfect for pups. They have an almost “character” type nature that falls in line with a wonderful companion to help you on an adventure. But not all names start out that way. In fact, some of them are founded on more serious principles.

In some cases, the actual definition doesn’t truly define what a name means to the people and pups that use it. Sometimes, names get their meaning during its journey through time and the users that have passed on their special characteristics down the line for future generations to enjoy.

Kirby’s olden origin

The actual origin was not used for people, but for places. It is an Old Norse combination of Kirkja (church) and byr (settlement) and was reflected in its use as a name for places throughout England and Ireland later.

But in the case of our furry friends, it’s often more enjoyable to leave out the seriousness and enjoy giving our pups some fun-filled identity with a simple name. And it’s important to note that while it is commonly associated with boys, it is ideal for girls as well.

Kirby the gamer

These pups have a tendency to be creative. At times, they might even seem incredible at it. Toys, puzzles, and even things that you wouldn’t normally play with suddenly appear on the game floor.

These pups love to live for the sense of humor. Whoever said pups can’t smile or laugh was wrong, particularly in the case of this pooch. You might note strange expressions on their face and a sudden feeling that something is about to happen. Yuppers, you might be falling for a prank they just pulled.

They have a knack for playing pranks and teasing, and while it might sound mean, it’s all part of the game of life. They just enjoy spicing it up a little to remind you to be on your toes and keep things interesting throughout life.

You may have heard…

The name Kirby has been a lightly used name in the past century, making only a few appearances, though it is good to mention that those with the name enjoy it and find it has a certain unique aspect that makes them feel special.

As far as sports go, there is Kirby Puckett, the famous centerfield hall of famer. And of course, there’s Kirby, the famous pink Nintendo character who puffs up like a balloon and battles the forces of evil. Kirby is also a brand of vacuum cleaners, which many pups are well-known for arguing with when they come rolling out of the closet and fill the house with scary noises.

Kirby is a great name for a pooch of either gender. And they don’t have to be pink to fill the characterization, so don’t dye your pup’s fur. With a silly attitude that jests to make the most of life, these pups brighten the scene with a little comedic relief to help you when you feel down and to remind you that life is fun.

Terry the Terrier?

Terrier DogSome names have a talent for suiting certain pups in particular. The name Terry fits right in for a certain group of dog breeds, particularly those that tend to be a little smaller but show no shortness in courage, intelligence, and loyalty.

While names tend to be universally acceptable for any application, when it comes to rhyming with a particular category of dog breeds, it is the terrier that finds this name most suiting. And keep in mind that there are several different terriers, like the Jack-Russell terrier or the Scottish terrier.

A Terry here, A Terry there

Terry happens to be an intriguing name that’s been around long enough to have origins in a large portion of the world. The German meaning of the name is “ruler of the people.” Slightly askew is the Norse meaning which means “like Thor,” who was the Norse god of Thunder. It’s fairly specific, but awesome nonetheless. For the English, it is also considered the abbreviation or nickname for Terrell or Terrence.

It is also the phonetically form of the French name, Theirre, which was derived from the German and also means “powerful,” or “ruler of the people.” And something completely different is that in the Latin, it was derived from an ancient Roman clan’s name.

Happy go lucky

These pups are supremely optimistic about everything. They rarely feel “down” about things because there’s always a chance. These chipper pups tend to be easily excited, which can sometimes be annoying when you’re bringing home groceries and your pup is bouncing all over you with excitement.

Energetic is saying little about a Terry. They tend to be hyper and find entertainment in the smallest of stimuli. A bug flies through the air? Instant hot pursuit. Take your slippers off? Now it’s a play toy. The upside is that these pups do very well even when alone. They love to play, but are capable of finding something entertaining all on their own. Of course, this sometimes includes de-fluffing your sofa cushions.

Now that you mention Terry…

Terry is one of those names that while seemingly popular only for boys, it also happens to be a girl’s name as well. One of the most famous pups to ever appear on screen is Terry. She happens to be the pup who played Toto in the Wizard of Oz movie.

For the humans, Terry Crews, the football athlete, is also renowned for his humorously awesome Old Spice commercials. Terry McMillan, author of the books, “Waiting to Exhale” and “How Stella Got Her Groove Back,” which also became movies. There’s also Terry Bradshaw, the famous football player who has turned to the mic to comment and report on the sport he loves

Terry is a great name for a pup of any kind, particularly those that tend to be a little hyper and very lovable. With a uniquely awesome pup-sonality, it is likely that a pup named Terry can easily slip their way into your life and your arms, even when you’re least expecting.

A Dog Named Jake

Playful dogSome names out there are an accumulation of variants from a few other names. It’s strange to find a name that has so many sources, some that sound similar and even some that you wouldn’t even normally familiarize it with. Jake is one of those strange names that is both a name in itself and one that just so happens to be derived from a few other names.

What? Where?

So for the origin, one must consider where your particular Jake has come from. Most commonly, and easily confused in a crowd, the name is referred as a medieval variant of the name Jack. It is important to note that Jack is derived from the name John. It is sometimes used as a short-name for the Hebrew names Jacob and James. Also, it is more commonly known as “Ivan” in some East European nations. Other variations include Jeb, Coby, and Koby, possibly due to the name Jacob, in which case you might shorten the name as “Coby” rather than “Jake.”

So it is sort of difficult to point out where from and what exactly the name Jake really means, unless you consider the fact that Jake is a universally versatile name. Nonetheless, it is a name that happens to be of extreme popularity these days. And due to the short nature of the name, only one syllable, it is perfect for a dog.

Loyalty is the motto

Jake is a name that seems to suit a dog that is indisputably loyal. They look towards their companion as both leader and provider, and have an awesome ability as a listener. This tends to make them adaptable to any type of owner.

Consider yourself a relaxed type of person with a calm personality, your pal will be right there with you, calm and content simply enjoying your company.

But if you’re the adventurous type, your pal would just love to join you in your quest. Want to go hiking? Of course your pal wants to go! Checking out the wildlife? Your pal is intrigued just as much as you would be.

These pooches are endeared to your own spirit and personality, whether you happen to be relaxed or energetic, they want to emphasize your life with a little fur and a lot of fun.

Sharing the name

Dog’s Life, the Playstation 2 game features as its main character, a dog named Jake who plays detective when it comes to solving a pup-napping crime and adventuring the world. Just saying, sounds pretty legit.

There is an interesting country song sung by Pirates of the Mississippi, “Feed Jake”. It’s a song about taking care of a friend’s loyal companion after the owner passes because “he’s been a good dog, my best friend right through it all.”

And there is of course the very famous Jake Blues of the notorious Blues Brothers, a duo that seems to wreak mayhem and music and laughter wherever the blues takes them.

Jake is a simple name with an estranged history. Short for one name, a variant of another, Jake is left in the middle sort of waiting to be defined. And in many cases, it is your dog who defines the name. Who they are and what they do and the friends they love give them that special meaning, a meaning unique to your dog alone.

Rick, Leader of the Pack

Dog LeaderThere are a few names that display a variety of sources such as this particular one. Most have their primary source, some new age and others classical legends. But there are a few out there that have a knack for being widely versatile in origin. So much in fact that they come from completely different areas, originate from different names, and still manage to get the same meaning across somehow.

The meaning behind the…names?

The short and simple version of the name Rick means “hard ruler,” and is sourced in Old Germanic.  But delving a little deeper, it also means “eternal ruler,” in the Norse, in which case the origin of this meaning is actually founded through the name Eric, as in “Eric the Red” the Viking explorer. And in the English, it means “powerful, strong ruler,” though in this particular version, Rick happens to be short for the name “Theodoric.” So you can see that there are few version out there, and all of them happen to point to the fact that a pooch with this name is the “King.”

Qualities of a Rick

These pups are at their very core, adventurous. It’s a natural habit to seek excitement in some form, but these pups desire all forms, bit and small. So naturally, they have a hard time sitting still. This can easily be remedied by teaching them a vast amount of tricks and giving them tasks to focus on. Though distraction still wins in the end, and they will chase just about anything, from a ball to falling leaves.

Because the outdoors have a lot to offer dogs, it’s difficult to keep these pups comfy when they’re cooped up inside too long. And they do tend to bolt for the door when someone comes knocking.

They are generally great guardians, but a little authoritative when it comes to “their” stuff. “Someone just sat in my seat? I don’t think so!” They have a lot of bark, but little bite. They just like to remind others that they have the final say in their home. Now when they visit, they really don’t care as long as they’re having fun.

All in the name

There’s Rick Moranis, who was a huge celebrity during the 80’s and 90’s (though has faded from the spotlight to spend time with his family), renowned for his roles in comedy classics like “Honey I Shrunk the Kids” and “Ghostbusters.”

Then there is of course the lead character Rick from the popular AMC series “The Walking Dead,” which is amongst the most renowned television series, even amongst those who don’t watch. Since we happen to have just endured the “spooky” time of year, it seems a very fitting name.

Rick is a short, sweet, and to the point name for a good dog. A dog that loves adventure, protects their family and friends, and loves to make you laugh. So please share a tale of your furry pal, Rick, and how having them around makes your life that much better.

Watchdog, Greg

Stand DogSometimes the simplest sounding names have a whole lot to offer the world of meaning. And for dogs, the shorter, the better. Our furry friends don’t actively react to longer names, usually more than two syllables, which is why it’s convenient to find a few names that only have one.

Greg is a simple name that has a very long history in the world of names. The name itself is sourced from the Latin, word gregorios (gregorius or gregorien), which means “watchful” and “alert.” There is another source from the word “grex” which means “flock” or “herd.”

The name came about during the third century A.D., though it did not become widely popular until the sixth century, during the reign of famous pope, Greggory the Great, who is responsible for the calendar year we still use today, the Gregorian Calendar.

Something to be aware of is that there are actually quite a few ways to spell and even pronounce this old name. Variants include, Gregory, Gregg, Grig, Griggor, Gruger, all of which are from different areas of the world, from America to Germany. And as a last name, it was often spelled Grigori, which is common in areas such as England and Whales.

Greg pays attention

These pups have a tendency to “zone in” in what may seem to us as “zoning out.” Quite frankly, these pups pay attention, a little too much attention at times. A bug crawls on a leaf, your pup’s there to see what’s up. Insignificant scent just floated in from a far off place, your pup is wondering what it is.

It’s easy to train a Greg though. They’re focused and alert around the clock and love to see what’s new. And if you don’t have a practice list or a new trick for them to learn, keeping their attention on you might get a little hard.

Helpful and friendly, Greg does have that annoying side too. “You have something in your hand? What is it? Can I play with it? It’s no use trying to hide it behind your back, I know it’s there!” These pups are fun and playful, and not so easy to trick, but fun to try to trick.

You might know one…or two

Notably, it was one of the ten most popular names in America during the 1950’s, possibly in coalition with the success of a very famous movie actor. Gregory Peck, legendary actor from movies such as The Omen (a Halloween classic) and “To Kill a Mockingbird.”

There’s also Greg Gutfeld the rather comedic news analyst of his show, “Red Eye.” And speaking of comedy, for those that enjoy strange Youtube videos that make absolutely no sense but still make you laugh, “Old Gregg” is enjoyable for those with a crude sense of humor, but something your children probably shouldn’t watch.

Greg is a short, simple name that has years of experience and wonderful meaning. Attentive and aware, a pup with this name is a wonderful companion and watchful protector. Nothing gets by their keen spirit and big heart.

Miley or Miles

Smiling dogComing across strange names is sometimes easy when it comes to introducing pups to one another. There are some out there invented for the sole purpose of naming their dog’s particular characteristics and habits. And some happen to be ancient, a little older, and aged to perfection. Then there are those that just so happen to be a combination of both.

One particular name seemed to become popular due to its introduction to television through a famous singer and actress, Miley. But, the truth is that it’s been around a lot longer than that. It just wasn’t particularly popular for females, due to the fact that it actually started out as a male name.

With a smiley

Yes indeed, Miley is in fact the nickname for the name Miles, a name that’s been around for a very long time. It is most likely that the origin of this name is from the Slavic and Germanic word element,” Mil,” which would mean “Gracious.” Though in the earlier Latin, it is possible it was a form of the name Milo, which meant Soldier. But in all likelihood, it is comforting to consider the name as being that of a gracious soul. Dogs are after all, incredibly gracious when it comes to sharing your food with them.

Miles is sometimes spelled Miley, and is often associated with the name Milo, though the names are derived from different regions, Miles being preferred in areas such as Poland. And of course, Miles also happens to be the surname of the nickname and now officially proper name, Miley.

Ever heard of…

The very cool Jazz musician, Miles Davis is amongst the most renowned references to the name. As far as story books go, Miles Hendson was a character from Mark Twain’s The Prince and the Pauper, as well as a character in Nathaniel Hawthorn’s story The Blithedale Romance. Miles is actually very popular in television story lines as well, making it into sitcoms and shows like Murphy Brown.

The English monk, Miles Cloverdale was the first to translate the Bible into the English language. Myles Standish also happened to be among the first Pilgrims of the founding town in the America’s, Plymouth. And it also happens to be an English calculation in distance.

Though the current form, Miley, is credited to the pop-singer of today. Miley Cyrus was actually born under a completely different name, but due to her up-beat attitude and ability to face any challenge with a smile, she was nicknamed Smiley Miley by her parents. And in 2008, she legally changed her name to Miley.

Miley is a splendid name for either boy or girl, even though it is more popularly associated with the feminine these days. But it’s always cool to bring back some of the more ancient names, like Miles. Both are intertwined, but distanced by the centuries and characters they represent. So please share your Miley or Miles with everyone and tell a tale of what inspired you to choose this particularly intriguing name.

Furry Furman

energetic dogSome names have a talent for disappearing right off the radar and become exotic and strange to the ear. When you first hear them, you might even think someone is using a nickname or even mispronouncing a more common name, but nope. That’s the name your pooch has, and it isn’t made up in the least.

Meanings

One of these particular names happen to be Furman. It sounds a lot like Herman, which is why when I first heard it, I said it all wrong. But it was legitimately Furman, an older name from a whole other time period. And to boot, it is perfect for pooches, particularly the furry ones.

One particular origin is believed to be found in the seventh century, and was actually a job description that had become a surname. Another occupational reason for the name is found in the German “ferryman.”

It is also likely that the name was founded from two defining components, “Firm” and “Man.” The name would demonstrate a strong, solid, good foundation in a friend. And that’s a very nice definition for a faithful companion who also happens to be a little furry.

Rare, but you may have heard…

The reason for rarity actually comes from the fact that it was only moderately popular as a first name from around 1880 to 1920. After that, the rest becomes history. But that doesn’t mean it hasn’t left its mark in the books of history. In fact, this name is a mathematical unit of measure, named after Alan T. Furman. Another rather interesting mention is Furman Bishop, a famous sports writer, who very interestingly had attended Furman University for his education.

Furman the helpful

Pups bearing this name tend to be helpful in any which way they can conjure. That doesn’t necessarily mean they are completely helpful though. At times, they love to jump in and “help” by doing something, even if it happens to be hindering you. They try to help and have no ill intentions, even if they do tend to foul out occasionally (biting the newspaper too hard or nipping small holes in your slipper when they’re bringing you gifts). They just want to help, and with good instruction, they can be a blessing around the house.

These pups try hard at everything and always give it all they can muster. Whether you’re in a wrestling match or a game of tug-rope, they will go on until you are tired. These pups are destined to wear you out, so it’s a good name for a pup if you also happen to be an energetic person. And though there is no “I” in “team,” there is a dog.

Furman is an old name, quite rare in fact, which does give it that unique characteristic that some are looking for. Helpful to the end, these pups have a lot of heart and are always willing to go on an adventure with their best friends. So please share an adventure about you and your pup,

Thoughtful Winifred

Thinking dogFollowing up with Halloween styled names brings up a few semi-classical ones that some might familiarize with “scary” thoughts of witches and goblins and such. That is to say, the name itself isn’t scary, but upon reflection, we find they are generously relatable and almost nostalgic in a way. And therefore, they tend to make awesome names for our furry companions.

Where from?

Winifred is an old sounding name, which is why it tends to be seldom come across, save a few areas of the world. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t awesome. In fact, it’s rarer use makes it even more likeable for those that love a name that they don’t have to share with anyone else.

This name finds its source in the original Gwenfrewi, a Welsh name. It became popular in use in 16th century England, adapting itself from Gwenfrewi, possibly due to phonetic sound or the pronunciation due to dialect of the region of its use. Other variations include Freda and Winnie (Winnie the Poo Bear).

What is really interesting about this name is that it has nothing to do with anything scary at all. In fact, the meaning points towards a far more positive message than others out there. German, Teutonic, and Welsh refer the name to meaning, Peaceful, blessed, and reconciled.

But, due to the timing, it is important to note the inspiration for explaining this particular name. One of the main characters in a popular movie was a witch named Winifred (played by what famous actress?). Hocus Pocus was an early 90’s adventure that was silly and entertaining in a unique way.

A dog with Zen

Thinkers. These pups share their time between thinking and acting, balancing both so that they enjoy the best aspects of life. This often means that they’re moving and living at their own pace, which can range from fast to turtle at any given time. At times, it does make them hard to share a casual walk with, so hanging with them can be an unpredictable adventure.

These pups have a knack for understanding the meaning of life, the universe, and everything. This stems from an apparent calmness that they display at times, making funny faces, staring at the strangest objects or nothing at all, and even napping. These pups are thinking machines which is why they study things and learn quickly.

Add in the fact that they love to share that information with other dogs and you have a bonified mischief maker on your hands. Friends come to visit- your pal will show their pup the tricks of the trade. They love to teach others, and this includes you as well, so don’t overlook that strange woof they just told you because it might be some good advice to help you out with your day.

Winifred is a cool name for any time of year, and it just happened to be something that coincided with this Halloween season. While it can sound a little “witchy,” it is in fact a great name that describes some of the best, though sneaky, characteristics of a pup anyone will fall in love with.

Halloween Names… Just for the Night

Mummy DogOkay, Halloween is nearing and tons of kids and adults are bound to have something planned, whether it’s collecting candy, giving it out, or just showing up for the fun all dressed up.

For dogs, this is all strange and probably makes very little sense in the least, unless you happen to hand them some treats that are okay for them.

So your pooch is just hanging around, possibly wearing a strange outfit that you came up with and they finally agreed to, and now you’re wondering how to introduce them while out and about or when answering the door. Since few others are being “themselves” tonight, it might be sort of neat to let your pal have a play at it too.

Ideas to work with

A classic, (particularly if you’ve ever seen the old movie “Franken Weenie) could be Franken-Pooch or Doggen-Stein. An easy dress-up for this is two silver studs on their collar. They probably won’t even notice it so even the least-likely canine to cooperate won’t have a problem here.

You could go with Sweeny Dog, the mad furry groomer on your local street. It’s a cool name for a pup dressed in a suit and bowtie.

Perhaps you could go with Phantom of the Doghouse, a pup who enjoys singing (howling and barking) every chance they get. A mask could be difficult, though it’s perfect for the pup who isn’t seen but rather is only heard…

There’s Dog-mo-tep, the ancient mummified pup whose hunt for treats is relentless for all time. Easily achieved with a few bands of toilet paper (they probably will tear it off so you may have to role-play along) wrapped around their body is safe and simple enough to summon an ancient mummy dog.

A non-exclusive is (your pal’s name) the Wretched, but used more of as a title, just for that silly extra “scare” factor, especially if your pup is the friendliest pup on the block.

Slobber, the doggy ghost who slobbers everyone. An excellent name for those basset hounds out there who do enjoy making a little noise and covering everyone around them in slimy kisses.

Dogula, the pup who saps their food-bowl in mere seconds and can drain a treat of its deliciousness before it even touches the ground. A cape works, and they’ve already got the fangs and the appetite to boot, so you’re good to go.

Make it your own

These aren’t exactly names that you want your pooch to wear on their collar every day of their life. It’s just a strange difference from the day to day regularities that is as fun as you want it to be for both you and your pooch.

Halloween is one of those particular nights that people get to be something or someone else for a different look at the world. It’s a neat opportunity, so why not share it with your furry companion? So let’s hear some of your ideas. What are you planning with your pooch? And what cool name would you dub them this Halloween?

A lot of Ari

smart dogMost names have one, perhaps two meanings, which keeps things simple and organized. But, there are a few exceptions to the rule, and there are a few names out there with an abundance of meanings and even origins.

One of these names happen to be short, sweet, and easy for a pup to catch a hold of, which is perfect for any dog. Though simple in sound, short in spelling, the name Ari has a few special qualities that make it a big name.

Different Ari’s

Versatile in definition, Ari has a talent for having unique definitions and gender base depending on where you are in the world. The Norse and American meaning of the name is “eagle,” though possibly in spirit. In the Greek, it means “best of thinkers,” which is great for a problem solving (or super mischievous) canine friend. In Hebrew, the name means “lion,” once again in the case of spirit representation. And in Maori, the name means “visible and clear.” In some cases, it is considered an origin of the name “Harry” as well. There is a wide variety of meanings to choose from, or perhaps your pup represents a little of them all.

A well-known and widely recognized mention of this name happens to be from the Greek philosopher and great thinker, Aristotle. Well known for open mindedness, he constantly questioned the concept of “thinking outside of the box.” To him, there was no box.

Ari the thinker

This name represents an independent dog spirit who is inclined to wandering on their own at times. That doesn’t mean they’re introverts, they just enjoy their alone time, particularly when they’re constantly surrounded by distractions.

Their independent nature points towards the fact that these dogs are thinkers. They have a strong drive to accomplish their goals, which does take some thought and time on their part. Occasionally, you might find them simply staring at a door or the television, possibly trying to solve the conundrums that evade their understanding.

Of course, a side effect is that they tend to be hardheaded. Proud and stubborn at times, these dogs don’t give up easily and will fight hard and long to figure out a problem, such as doggy doors that are locked, the everyday doorknob, and that pesky Frisbee on the kitchen floor that is just impossible to pick up.

Ari is a great name for any dog of any size, particularly because there is a generous selection of meanings that reflect the strong spirit of a loving companion. But that doesn’t mean they don’t need you to be there for them. After all, a dog with a strong and clever spirit is great company, and they can probably even figure out a few things for you too.
