There are some out there invented for the sole purpose of naming their dog’s particular characteristics and habits. And some happen to be ancient, a little older, and aged to perfection. Then there are those that just so happen to be a combination of both.

One particular name seemed to become popular due to its introduction to television through a famous singer and actress, Miley. But, the truth is that it’s been around a lot longer than that. It just wasn’t particularly popular for females, due to the fact that it actually started out as a male name.

Yes indeed, Miley is in fact the nickname for the name Miles, a name that’s been around for a very long time. It is most likely that the origin of this name is from the Slavic and Germanic word element,” Mil,” which would mean “Gracious.” Though in the earlier Latin, it is possible it was a form of the name Milo, which meant Soldier. But in all likelihood, it is comforting to consider the name as being that of a gracious soul. Dogs are after all, incredibly gracious when it comes to sharing your food with them.

Miles is sometimes spelled Miley, and is often associated with the name Milo, though the names are derived from different regions, Miles being preferred in areas such as Poland. And of course, Miles also happens to be the surname of the nickname and now officially proper name, Miley.

The very cool Jazz musician, Miles Davis is amongst the most renowned references to the name. As far as story books go, Miles Hendson was a character from Mark Twain’s The Prince and the Pauper, as well as a character in Nathaniel Hawthorn’s story The Blithedale Romance. Miles is actually very popular in television story lines as well, making it into sitcoms and shows like Murphy Brown.

The English monk, Miles Cloverdale was the first to translate the Bible into the English language. Myles Standish also happened to be among the first Pilgrims of the founding town in the America’s, Plymouth. And it also happens to be an English calculation in distance.

Though the current form, Miley, is credited to the pop-singer of today. Miley Cyrus was actually born under a completely different name, but due to her up-beat attitude and ability to face any challenge with a smile, she was nicknamed Smiley Miley by her parents. And in 2008, she legally changed her name to Miley.

Miley is a splendid name for either boy or girl, even though it is more popularly associated with the feminine these days. But it’s always cool to bring back some of the more ancient names, like Miles. Both are intertwined, but distanced by the centuries and characters they represent.
