A Pup Named Waldo

dog waldoIn today’s world, dog names have become amazingly humanistic in nature. Some pups have names like Molly or Zach, which are commonly associated with humans, giving the canine companions a place closer to our hearts and a special place in our homes. Then there are certain names in today’s world that seemed to have fallen out of popular use for humans. But that doesn’t mean they have lost their appeal for our canine companions.

The Waldo of the house

Waldo, while not common to find people using it, has found a special niche as a dog name. The Old German meaning defines Waldo as being “powerful” and “ruler.” For many dogs, especially those who enjoy plenty of spoiling, this is an excellent name. Some rascals have such authority in their home that they seem to have a knack for getting their way, like having their own special seat on the couch (that’s my spot, so move!).

Initially, Waldo was a short name for longer Old German names, such as Waldemar and Waldebert. As time progressed, they were absorbed into English use, and the name Waldo became popular especially during the early 1900’s, but dropped off sharply after the 1940’s. Since then, it has been reserved for canine companions.

Walden and Waldron are the two male variations of this name, setting it apart in the name world, while its only feminine variation is Walda. This also means that there is little play for nicknames, though names like Wally (this is an altogether different name though) could be used to call that rascal in for dinner or when you’re in a hurry.

Where’s Waldo?

One of the well-known bearers of this name was the philosopher and poet Ralph Waldo Emerson, who believed strongly in individualism. If a little bit of character does carry with the name, you might find that your pup enjoys a little bit of time on their own, exploring the world around them at their own leisure. They may take off on their own and explore the neighbor’s yard to hide in the bushes and challenge you to come and find them.

This brings up another well-known Waldo who is the famous literary character from the books – Where’s Waldo? This puzzling character was notorious for hiding in plain sight in various places across the world, challenging others to find him. Hopefully, your own Waldo doesn’t hide from you though. Well, they might snuggle up in the couch cushions when it comes time to take a bath.

Waldo may not be as popular as some of today’s trending dog names. But it does have one advantage – it is very unique. Whether you’re out at the park or hanging out with a few friends, when you call your pup you won’t have to worry about anyone around, both pup and people, turning to see if you just called them. And the nice thing is that wherever you may go, it will always be a little easier to find your four-legged friend Waldo.
